Dr. Akin,
I agree with 100% of the GCR but I think one reason for the decline of many SBC churches and the denomination collectively is 1) a diminishing passion for sharing Christ among the laity, and 2) a compounding of #1 because few churches have a PROCESS for making disciples. All due respect to the GCR, but the Great Commission has two sides (evangelism and teaching), and SBC leaders unwittingly assume that the process of teaching new Christians will somehow just happen. I believe discipled Christians are better evangelists. Read my more in depth article at: http://drthomreece.wordpress.com/2009/06/29/the-hole-in-the-great-commission-resurgence/
Blessings,

[...] + The Great Commission Resurgence (GCR) proposal was overwhelmingly affirmed — and that may be the most important action we have taken in years. Many speakers at the Pastor’s Conference on Monday referenced the need for significant rethinking and restructuring in the SBC approach to mission. Danny Akin did a masterful job of making the case. The debate in the hallways and on the floor fell on expected lines: SBC traditionalists , denominational defenders and Builder /upper Boomer generations vs SBC creatives, who lean towards Kingdom coalitions and generations from younger Boomer through milennials. Oh– and there was also the guy who wanted to make this about slapping the hands of ” Calvinists and Calvinist sympathizers.” Please. The final vite wasn’t even close. This had the sense of a wave of the Spirit that could not be stopped. (You can read Akin’s original GCR address here.)
Dan, thank you for writing. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts. My views are reflected well in the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy and the Chicago Statement on Hermeneutics. You can also go to www.danielakin.com and find a message I delivered entitled "Jesus, Southern Baptist and the Bible." Matt. 5:17-18; John 10:35; 17:17 capture well our Lord's mind on the Bible (in His day our OT). Do I think Jesus believed Methuselah was 900 years old? Yes I do. Do I believe it as well? Yes I do. Do I think this is where our SBC is? Yes. God bless. Danny

You wrote: "To deny inerrancy is to say that Jesus was wrong and that you are smarter than He. That is both heresy and blasphemy. It is spiritually suicidal!
Are you questioning inerrancy? Then repent! Do you deny inerrancy? Then go join another denomination. We will love you and pray for you, but we do not want you infecting our people with a spiritual disease that is always fatal to the Church of the Lord Jesus."

This text sounds hostile and not in keeping with the message of Jesus Christ. This is *your* interpretation of what he may have thought. I do not find a Biblical basis for your claim. I have been a Southern Baptist for all my 50 years. A good bit of what you are saying is in direct conflict with my understanding of our denomination.

Can you say more about what you mean by inerrancy? Do you mean literal accuracy? For example, must we believe that Methuselah lived 900 years or else get out of "your" denomination?

Thanks.
