Matt, thank you for the encouragement. It looks like you have a great list there. I need to read more in psychology/counseling myself...

Chris, you're dang skippy! I would estimate that I put down at least half of the books that I pick up b/c they turn out not to be worth the read.

"How to keep discipline from being drudgery"

If you're not reading it for school, you don't have to read it. Commit to reading the first 50 pages, and if you don't like it by then, put it down! There are too many wonderful books out there to suffer through something you simply hate.

Dr. Ashford,

I got the link to this series from Justin Taylor's blog. Thanks so much for the challenge to become a disciplined reader. I just got one writing down my preliminary list of categories: theology, practical ministry, biographies, fiction, church history, psychology, and missiology/contemporary world issues.

"To read is to image forth the Creator."

I need no further motivation. I suspect this will be the beginning of an incredibly rich and satisfying discipline for me. Thank you.

Dr. Ashford,
Thanks for the series. Thought I might be able to give a plug for a good site for book reviews from a Evangelical lens...

Great post on disciplined reading. I schedule my time out every week, and you really are surprised at how much time you have. As Ministers in the 21st century context, we can do no less than to acquire an adequate habit of reading, immersing ourselves even more into the Great Conversation of history. Can't wait for your reading lists.

We are a not-for-profit educational organization, founded by Mortimer Adler and we have recently made an exciting discovery--three years after writing the wonderfully expanded third edition of How to Read a Book, Mortimer Adler and Charles Van Doren made a series of thirteen 14-minute videos, lively discussing the art of reading. The videos were produced by Encyclopaedia Britannica. For reasons unknown, sometime after their original publication, these videos were lost.

Three hours with Mortimer Adler on one DVD. A must for libraries and classroom teaching the art of reading.

I cannot over exaggerate how instructive these programs are--we are so sure that you will agree, if you are not completely satisfied, we will refund your donation.

Please go here to see a clip and learn more:
