K-berger Kellum_ Cradle Cross Crown

Andreas Köstenberger has unleashed an avalanche of books over the past decade, and none more significant than his recently released co-authored (with Scott Kellum and Chuck Quarles) introduction to the New Testament, The Cradle, The Cross, and The Crown (B&H, 2009).
Köstenberger, Kellum, and Quarles have given us a comprehensive introduction to the New Testament which not only matches the strengths of other evangelical introductory texts, but also provides several unique distinctive such as (1) a … [Read More]

A Life-Changing Experience in Sudan

Jun 24th, 2010 by Daniel Akin

In early May, Charlotte and I had the honor and joy of going to Sudan. It was one of those life changing experiences! 1631, most of them walking (!), came together from Congo, Uganda and Sudan for a Pastors/Bible Conference. 171 were baptized. One new church was started under mango trees! And, the American team was changed forever.
At the Pastors’ Conference at the SBC in Orlando, I shared a brief 5 minute video that beautifully … [Read More]

Lawless

In the wake of the SBC’s appointment of a Great Commission Resurgence Task Force last year, Broadman & Holman commissioned a book on the topic, The Great Commission Resurgence: Fulfilling God’s Mandate in Our Time. The 429 page treatise, edited by Chuck Lawless and Adam Greenway, has just now been released and is worth your time reading if you are interested in the SBC and GCR.
The Great Commission Resurgence includes essays written by pastors (David … [Read More]

Reflections on the 2010 SBC in Orlando

Jun 22nd, 2010 by Daniel Akin

The record may reveal that the 2010 Convention in Orlando was a historic moment for the churches of the SBC.  Only time will tell.  From my perspective it was a wonderful Convention as Southern Baptists affirmed overwhelmingly how we wish to chart our future.  What were the crucial happenings and their significance at this year’s convention?  Let me highlight several.
First, and by far the most important, was the adoption of the GCRTF Report.  By a … [Read More]

Post-SBC Reflections

Jun 22nd, 2010 by Ed Stetzer

The SBC is over.
It really is.  The “convention” is a meeting that meets once a year and that meeting has closed.  Now, we will all go back to our locally autonomous churches and work to fulfill the mission of God. Hopefully what was accomplished at this year’s annual meeting will help that work press forward. But ultimately, the Great Commission is given to believers and the church, not denominational structures, entities, and employees.
But, because I … [Read More]

How Mark Noll’s Mind Has Changed

Jun 21st, 2010 by Nathan Finn

When I was an undergrad at Brewton-Parker College in South Georgia, I was wrestling with the question of calling and vocation. I entered college believing that God was calling me to full-time local church ministry, and throughout college I served in bivocational youth ministry and interim pastor positions. Though I loved that work (well, not so much the youth ministry), by my senior year I had a growing desire to pursue a ministry of theological education … [Read More]

40 Questions about Interpreting the Bible

40 Questions about Interpreting the Bible

During the two years I was a M.Div. student at Southern Seminary, one of my favorite professors was a young New Testament scholar named Rob Plummer. I took a fruitful year of Greek from Rob—I still remember some of the silly songs that he and my now SEBTS colleague Ben Merkle wrote to help us remember Greek paradigms. One of the things I liked best about those Greek classes was the way Rob’s heart for … [Read More]

Toward a Unified SBC

Jun 11th, 2010 by Ed Stetzer

The SBC annual meeting is rapidly approaching and, as it does, the back and forth across the Internet seems to have accelerated pace. Pastors and denominational leaders have rushed to publish their views, sometimes gently and sometimes not so gently, but publish they have.  If the secular press decides to take a gander at blogs, news sites and Twitter feeds, they will likely have no shortage of evidence to substantiate their long held belief that … [Read More]

Making Friends for Christ: A Practical Approach to Relational Evangelism

Jun 11th, 2010 by Nathan Finn
Making Friends for Christ

Wayne is best known for being a practitioner, advocate, and teacher of expositional preaching. His most well-known books are probably his two preaching textbooks: The Twelve Essential Skills for Great Preaching, 2d. ed. (B&H Academic, 2006) and The Moment of Truth: A Guide to Effective Sermon Delivery (B&H Academic, 1999). Both of these textbooks are used in numerous seminaries and colleges. Wayne has also mentored dozens of doctoral students over the years, most of whom … [Read More]

Baptists, combating malaise, preoccupied by numbers

Jun 10th, 2010 by Nathan Finn

Adelle M. Banks of Religious News Service has written a brief article about the current state of the SBC leading up to the Orlando Convention. You can read it here. The article quotes BtT contributors Ed Stetzer and Alvin Reid, among others.
