Sep 30th, 2010 by Bruce Ashford

You have been put on notice: SEBTS professor Heath Thomas’s ‘Until He Looks Down and Sees’: The Message and Meaning of the Book of Lamentations (The Grove Biblical Series) has been published and is the best one-stop theological introduction to the book of Lamentations. This theological commentary is part of The Grove Biblical Series, which also includes contributors such as N.T. Wright, Christopher J.H. Wright, Richard Bauckham, and Craig Bartholomew.
As Thomas points out, Lamentations appears … [Read More]

The State(s) of our Convention

Sep 29th, 2010 by administrator

Between the Times contributor Nathan Finn has teamed up with Oklahoma Baptist Messenger editor Doug Baker in a new editorial titled The State(s) of our Convention. They appreciate state conventions, are troubled by what they think is an “adversarial posture” on the part of some Southern Baptists toward state conventions, and argue for a “core set of ministry priorities” that should guide state conventions in the future. You should read the editorial.

Why All Good Christians Should Celebrate Halloween

Sep 28th, 2010 by georgerobinson

October 31st.  For most Americans this date means one thing: **Halloween.**  Costumes, candy and trick-or-treaters spending to the tune of $2.5 billion making this holiday second only to Christmas in marketing revenue.  But good Christians don’t celebrate Halloween.  Or do they?  Some Protestants may prefer to call it Reformation Day, for after all, that is the date that Martin Luther nailed his Theses to the door at Castle Church in Wittenberg back in 1517.  That … [Read More]

Why Elders? A Biblical and Practical Guide for Church Members

Sep 23rd, 2010 by administrator
Why Elders?

Some theologians have difficulty in writing theology for the church rather than for the academy. Ben Merkle is not one of them. As evidence, I offer Why Elders? A Biblical and Practical Guide for Church Members, a slim little volume (112 pp.) intended to help your church think through matters of church polity. In this book, Merkle asks why church government is an issue worth discussing and why church members should care about how … [Read More]

John Wesley’s Twelve Rules for Preachers

Sep 22nd, 2010 by Nathan Finn

John Wesley (1703-1791) was one of the key leaders of the Evangelical Awakening in Britain during the mid-18th century. Circumstances drove Wesley to adopt itinerant evangelistic preaching, an idea he picked up from his friend and former student George Whitefield. Once Wesley embraced itinerancy, he extended his movement’s influence by appointing other itinerant preachers to serve various “circuits” (regional networks) of “classes” (small groups)–Wesley hoped this strategy would bring evangelical renewal to the Church of England. It … [Read More]

What is the ‘need of the hour’ in the SBC? pt 1

Sep 21st, 2010 by J. D. Greear

The Southern Baptist Convention, through whom our church does a lot of our church planting, has been undergoing some changes in the last few years. Many have called it the “Great Commission Resurgence.” Others have criticized it as a departure from institutional principles that have led to Southern Baptist successes in the past. Some have thought it is a desperate attempt to save a sinking ship.
I’d say it has been characterized … [Read More]

The Lonely Planet Guide to Faculty Fashion & Apparel

Sep 21st, 2010 by Bruce Ashford

Only a person with a petrified diaphragm could fail to laugh out loud at Kerry Soper’s “RateMyProfessor’sAppearance.com” in the September 17 (2010) issue of The Chronicle Review. In the brief little satire, Soper refers to one of the “rate your professor” websites which allows students to rate their professor’s class performance as well as their appearance. The student is allowed to place an icon of a chili pepper beside a professor who is particularly good … [Read More]

The Comprehensive Nature of a Great Commission Classroom

Sep 20th, 2010 by georgerobinson

The Great Commission has tremendous import for Southern Baptists.  Historically, our Convention was founded upon the desire for churches to participate in God’s global redemptive mission.  More recently, the 2010 SBC in Orlando saw the historic passing of the Great Commission Resurgence Task Force recommendations.  And here at Southeastern Seminary, we “seek to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ by equipping students to serve the church and fulfill the Great Commission.”  We are truly a Great … [Read More]

Entrusted with the Gospel: Paul’s Theology in the Pastoral Epistles

Sep 16th, 2010 by Bruce Ashford
Entrusted with the Gospel

Andreas Köstenberger’s and Terry Wilder’s Entrusted with the Gospel: Paul’s Theology in the Pastoral Epistles is a valuable resource for anyone teaching, preaching, or writing on the Pastoral Epistles.  In particular, it is helpful for those entrusted with the role of shepherding the flock of God.  The authors have collected a leading group of evangelical scholars to respond to the recent wave of critical scholarship on the Pastorals.  Indeed, the aim of the volume is … [Read More]
