Toward a Confessional Basis for Cooperation in the SBC: Some Preliminary Thoughts

Aug 27th, 2010 by Nathan Finn

Southern Baptists are not as confessional as we claim we are, but we ought to be. This is my thesis. For some Southern Baptists, this will seem like common sense. For others, it will be provocative and perhaps even anathema. But the time has come to begin having this discussion. My prayer is that it will soon become a discussion before the Convention itself.
The following paragraphs are cited from my essay “Priorities for a Post-Resurgence Convention,” … [Read More]

Confessional Consensus, Part 2

Jun 3rd, 2010 by Ed Stetzer

I have a copy of the Baptist Faith and Message 2000 on my desk. I have never used it for my daily quiet time. I have not opened it in a while. To be honest, I am not sure why I left it there, but why it is there is of no importance. The little red booklet is insignificant, but what it represents is essential. It is the Baptist Faith and Message, the confessional statement … [Read More]

Confessional Consensus, Part 1

Jun 2nd, 2010 by Ed Stetzer

I believe it is no longer possible to “guilt” the next generation into the SBC. That worked in past years when the SBC was a tribal culture and there were few legitimate options for partnering, but guilt will not play now. The Southern Baptist Convention in 1960

Dec 13th, 2009 by Nathan Finn

In 1960, Time Magazine ran a fascinating profile of the Southern Baptist Convention, which is available online. A number of prominent Convention personalities of the era were profiled as the popular periodical tried to interpert Southern Baptists for a general readership. The article is an interesting glance into our past.
I’ve written quite a bit about the mid-twentieth-century SBC over the past three or four years. Though our churches were of course diverse, in terms of our corporate … [Read More]

On The GCR Declaration, Part 3

Jun 17th, 2009 by Nathan Finn

Lord willing, over the next few days I will be blogging through the GCR Declaration in anticipation of next week’s SBC Annual Meeting in Louisville, Kentucky. This is the third article in what I hope will be a series. As you read, please remember that while Between the Time is a group blog that includes a number of Southeastern Seminary professors, these articles (and every article I write) represent my own personal opinions. I speak … [Read More]

Axioms for a Great Commission Resurgence

Apr 16th, 2009 by administrator

In about 90 minutes Eastern Standard Time, Dr. Akin will preach a chapel message titled “Axioms for a Great Commission Resurgence.” Many of our readers have known for a couple of weeks that this message was forthcoming, and the SEBTS community and other friends have been praying for this morning for days. Later today, Dr. Akin’s complete manuscript will be posted at BtT. In anticipation of that, however, we have chosen to go ahead and … [Read More]
